Our 8 rooms are spread across 4 duplex wooden cottages. We have both double and twin-sharing rooms, furnished with air conditioning, hot water and balconies. Our dark wood cottages blend seamlessly into the greenery around and have a cozy, nest-like feel with crisp white sheets and soft fluffy pillows. The balconies open right into the canopy and it is the perfect place to enjoy a steaming cup of herbal tea (the rooms have kettles and tea/coffee supplies for you to brew your own cuppa). Each bed has its own reading lamp should you wish you curl up with a good book late into the night.
The Big Tree was designed to connect with nature and with each other, and towards that aim we have not installed televisions in our rooms. Phone and internet connectivity in the Andaman Islands – Chidiyatapu particularly – are fairly limited. We suggest bringing along a phone with a BSNL sim card & data to stay connected with the outside world. We have limited Wi-Fi at our resort and BSNL mobile data works well enough for Whatsapp and emails, however we suggest you do not schedule any video calls during your stay with us.
Leave your work at home if you can help it!
"The Big Tree Café, with its cool red oxide floor, gently sloping thatched roofs and wide open sides open to the trees and bright yellow flowers and cool breezes, is the perfect spot to eat and drink and mingle."
Our aim is to bring you organic, seasonal, local produce, straight from our farm to our kitchens and on your table. We grow everything from herbs to vegetables, fruit and rice and our repertoire is always growing so we may rely less and less on imported, store-bought produce.
The Big Tree farm is very much a community affair. While Jaganath uncle and Tipil are the core workers, everyone from the managers to the Café Team and housekeepers pitch in during their free time, especially in the busy times of planting and harvesting. We welcome and encourage our guests to do the same – there is a simple joy in picking your own food and it just tastes better once it is served up on your plate.
We serve food that is simple, wholesome, tasty and made to order. For breakfast we offer options such as smoothies, fresh fruit, eggs to order or South Indian. Lunch is usually local fare – thalis, curries, etc. Dinner has a wide range of options from pastas, street Chinese and grills. We also have a round-the-clock menu of sandwiches, wraps and finger food.
Our café and kitchen are designed to make you feel at home – we’re happy to make you off-the-menu treats to satiate any cravings you might have. Do keep us informed of any allergies, food restrictions or particular likes and dislikes so we can work with you to create a perfect dining experience.
